How can a Rouge Doula support you emotionally after your abortion?
When you receive support with a Rouge Doula around your abortion, that doula is providing non-medical, emotional, physical, and practical support before, during, and after.
Below are some ways you can be emotionally supported after your abortion:
1. Direct Emotional Support
Processing feelings — whether you feel relief, sadness, uncertainty, or a mix, a doula can offer a nonjudgmental space to share.
Reflecting on the experience — an opportunity to relay how the procedure went, what felt empowering or difficult, and anything you want to reflect on.
2. Aftercare Guidance
General recovery information — what typical bleeding or cramping is like, what rest might look like, and when to contact a medical provider if something seems off (they don’t give medical advice, but can help you interpret what’s within a normal range and what needs follow-up).
Support with daily tasks — creating a safe and clean space, meal prep, or ensuring you have supplies can make recovery easier. A doula can help gently point you to taking care of your baseline needs by reminding you about things like staying hydrated and eating something. When your baseline needs are met, you are physically and mentally in a more optimal space to move through your emotional state.
3. Advocacy & Affirmation
Validating your decisions and your autonomy.
Offering harm-reduction information if you’re navigating stigma, unsafe environments, or complicated life circumstances.
Helping you understand your rights within your healthcare system or local laws and give resources if you need help (without giving legal advice).
Connecting you with resources such as support groups, counseling, financial assistance programs, or reproductive health services.
4. Continued Support Over Time
You can ask for a check in for a few days or weeks after your abortion.
We may be able to provide referrals for mental health support if you want to seek counseling.
A doula can also help you think about future reproductive choices, contraception, or support systems you might want in place.

Here is what one Rouge Doula shares about post abortion support:
“I always tell people that ask me what the best thing someone can do, is ask the person going through the abortion what they need. Checking in is also good, if they want to be alone. Encouraging them to stay hydrated and on top of pain management, is also tremendously helpful. Overall, just being there to listen without speaking, is extremely helpful.”-M
A Rouge Doula is here to support you during the most important parts of your abortion experience! Please feel free to reach out to one today.
